Work description
Interns are expected to provide critical technical support to Platform-supported projects that aim to develop commercially viable products for the advancement of the Bioeconomy.
Thus, the internship process would offer an opportunity for the transfer of scarce critical skills to interns, while also providing exposure to bioprocess development, proof-of-concept stages through to technology demonstration.
Program specification:
General microbiological techniques; Expand microbial cell culture from flasks to bioreactors. Troubleshooting bioreactor challenges and exposure to product and process biodevelopment. Experience in bioreactors / fermentation technologies, post-bioprocessing, microbiology.
DNA extraction, real-time PCR, infectious disease pathology laboratory work experience. Registration with HPCSA is an advantage, but not a requirement. Mammalian cell culture; Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay; protein purification; protein biochemistry. Troubleshooting or optimization of PCR assays.
Routine chemical analysis work, carry out research projects according to customer requirements, maintain SANAS ISO 17025 accreditation, maintain chemical inventory database and inventory, general cleaning.

Graduates and postgraduates in the following streams are eligible to apply:
National Diploma / Bachelor’s Degree or BTech / Honors in:
Biotechnology,
Microbiology or
Biochemistry
Bachelor or BTech / Honors in:
Medical microbiology,
Molecular biology,
Medical Sciences,
Microbiology or biochemistry
BTech / Honors in:
Chemistry or
Analytic chemistry
Must be South African
Competencies:
An agile member of the team;
Good oral and written communication skills;
A team builder.
Must be adaptable and willing to work shifts.
